Both YMCA’s – Fayetteville and Hope Mills – offer progressive
swimming lessons for all ages and skill levels with Red Cross certification
upon completion. Fayetteville is year ‘round in our indoor pool and
Hope Mills is summer only at Rae-O-Hope Pool on Hope Mills Road.

Parent Tot – This water orientation class is available for ages
6 months to 36 months. The goal of this class is to provide a positive
first experience to the water. The class emphasis is on water adaptation
with an introduction to bubble blowing, floating, kicking, using the arms
and entering/exiting the water. Parents are in the water so as to
learn to teach these skills to their child. All infants/toddlers
must wear either rubber swim pants or a swim diaper that fits snugly around
the legs.
Pre-School – This class is designed for children between the
ages of 3-5 years. Children should be comfortable enough to work
with an instructor in a group of 4-5 other children independent of their
parents. Children will learn to propel themselves independently through
the water, basic stroke skills, and important safety skills. Children
must be three years of age by the first day of class.
School age to Adult levels – These progressive classes are for
anyone between the ages of 5 – 105 years. Throughout the levels participants
will learn/develop a good freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly,
treading, entering/exiting the water, endurance along with other lifetime
strokes and important safety skills. We want to give confidence in
the water so as to have a love of water and know how get along in the water.
We offer adult classes for those with fear of the water – guaranteed to
be comfortable after one month.
Lifeguard Training – This American Red Cross class is designed
for those interested in future life guarding. Participants must be
15 years old, able to swim 500 yards demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke,
submerge into 9 feet of water and retrieve a10 # brick and swim on the
back 20 yards with it. Upon completion, this class includes certification
in CPR-PR/First Aid/AED/BBP. Recertification is available upon request.
Water Safety Instructor – This class is for anyone that always
wanted to teach swimming lessons. Instructor candidates must be 16
years of age, passed level four, and/or able to pass prerequisites swimming/strokes
test the first night of class. Upon completion, participants will
receive American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and F.I.T. certifications.
Recertification is available upon request.
Water Aerobics – This class is designed to encourage people of
all ages and body types to use the water’s buoyancy and resistance to enhance
their level of physical fitness. Classes use water dumbbells and
noodles for added resistance and certainly fun. ALL fitness levels
are welcome.
Water Arthritis – Approved by the National Arthritis Foundation
and the National YMCA, the program is targeted for individuals with arthritis
and/or other minor disabilities. The safe moves are designed to minimize
joint stress, increase range of motion and flexibility, while improving
muscle tone.
Additional available upon request – CPR/FA/AED/BBP for the workplace,
CPR for Pets, Boy Scout certifications, fostering military skills test,
birthday parties, and lap swimming.
